Introduction
In recent years, the use of computer in English exams/ classes has grown rapidly in Kazakhstan as a result of the increasing emphasis on communicative teaching techniques. Being a profitable and valuable resource, computer is well-liked by both students and teachers. Students like it because they can get detailed information about how people behave in the culture whose language they are learning. Teachers like it because computer gives a wide range of communication situations to discuss in the classrooms.

Information Technology is becoming more international and multilingual. In general, computer is recognized as a major gateway to the world. It also helps to create a rational method of teaching English.

Our text book is a demonstration of such methods. This educational supply contains interesting texts about computer,selected extra for the students who study Information Technology. Its various tasks are organized to improve writing/ speaking skills.The exercises are of a grait importance for translating from English into Kazakh/Russian or from Kazakh/Russian into English,acting out dialogues,doing tests/correcting works ,writing informal/formal letters.All the mentioned activities help the teachers to make their method more effective and interesting.

The book also has a Grammar Reference, Conversional Formulas and English/Russian dictionary with the Computer lexis.

We hope the activities illustrated in this text book will be of a wide use to English teachers dealing with the faculty of Information Technology.


Lesson 1
Computer
a) See if you can understand the following words and word combinations and give their Russian/Kazakh equivalents.

Disk/floppy; keyboard; mouse pad; CPU(central processing unit); display monitor/monitor/screen; slot; surge protector; scanner; CD-ROM player; program/application; CD-ROM disc=CD-ROM; cable; disk drive; user’s manual; mother board; printer; power switch; mouse; port; modem; laptop; external speaker; hard disk drive;


A computer is an electronic device that stores information and allows to change it through the use of instructions. A modern computer is capable of doing various tasks, like word processing and accounting. Personal computers (PCs) are widely used but working on them requires some techniques.

After turning on the computer a PC user should log into the network by entering their user name and password. Allow some time for the operation system to load. Soon you’ll see a menu (or icons) on the monitor screen. With the help of mouse or the keyboard choose the needed icon and start the program. The program allows the user to type texts, draw objects and diagrams. While drawing one can shape, move,transform, copy and fill objects. When creating texts we format, edit and copy them. Both drawings and texts can be saved or deleted. If you have a printer, you can print the information displayed on the screen. Don’t forget to save your file onto your hard disk and deck it up onto the floppies.

CD-ROMs can be used produce images on the computer screen. The user can move around the program clicking on different parts of the screen with a mouse.Clicking on the text will provide a new screen with more information, either in the form of text and diagrams, or as an animated cartoon.

Computers give us access to the Internet-an international computer network connecting other networks and computers from companies, universities or individuals etc. You can spend a lot of your free time surfing the Internet and get all sorts of information from it. You can enter the chat room with other Internet users and debate urgent problems on line. If you are connected by e-mail , you can correspond with your friends or open your own web site and place there information about yourself.

Computer (Part II)

In the modern world the computers are used in all areas of life. We encounter many daily computers. I use the computer for writing programs, solving of various tasks and entertainments. Other people use computer for other purposes. Electrical engineer use them to design installations and lighting systems. The pharmacists use the computer for drawing up and storage of the recipes of medicines. Librarian use computers to find information for people. The historian uses the computer for classification the historical facts. The composer uses the computer for composing music. The secretary uses the computer for sending faxes and documents. Computer can also operate planes, make the time-table and etc. With the help of the computer it is possible to pay bills, to make purchases and etc. Microchips are use in many devices. They are widely used in the manufacture of TVs. Besides they are used in calculators, cinemas etc. If you like gadgets and electronic entertainment, you can even use your PC to relax with computer games.

Computers

Generally, any device that can perform numerical calculations , even an adding machine, may be called a computer but nowadays this term is used especially for digital computers. Computers that once weighed 30 tons now may weigh a little as 1.8 kilograms. Microchips and microprocessors have considerably reduced the cost of the electronic components required in a computer. Computers come in many sizes and shapes such as special-purpose, laptop, desktop, minicomputers, supercomputers.

S

pecial-purpose computers can perform specific tasks and their operations are limited to the programs built into their microchips. There computers are the basis for electronic calculators and can be found in thousands of electronic products, including digital watches and automobiles. Basically, these computers do the ordinary arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.


General-purpose computers are much more powerful because they can accept new sets of instructions. The smallest fully functional computers are called laptop computers. Most of the general-purpose computers known as personal or desktop computers can perform almost 5 million operations per second.

Today’s personal computers are known to be used for different purpose: for testing new theories or models that cannot be examined with experiments, as valuable educational tools due to various encyclopedias, dictionaries, educational programs, in book-keeping, accounting and management. Proper application of computing equipment in different industries is likely to result in proper management, effective distribution of materials and resources, more efficient production and trade.

Minicomputers are high-speed computers that have greater data manipulating capabilities than personal computers do and that can be used simultaneously by many users. These machines are primary used by larger research and university centers. The speed and power of supercomputers, the highest class of computers, are almost beyond comprehension, and their capabilities are continually being improved. The most complex of these machines can perform nearly 32 billion calculations per second and store 1 billon characters in memory at one time, and can do in one hour what a desktop computer would take 40 years to do. They are used commonly by government agencies and large research centers. Linking together networks of several small computer centers and programming them to use a common language has enabled engineers to create the supercomputer. The aim of his technology is to elaborate a machine that could perform a trillion calculations per second.
